From the Coast into the Desert
A full-day 4x4 tour from Swakopmund into the Namib to the Spitzkoppe granite peaks, with ancient San rock paintings, a Skeleton Coast shipwreck, and lunch in the desert.
You leave the Atlantic mist behind and head inland. Within an hour the pavement ends and the route cuts through open desert toward a cluster of orange-pink granite domes rising out of flat sand. These are the Spitzkoppe peaks, and they're about 120 million years old. The Damara people call the tallest one the "Matterhorn of Africa," and from the desert floor you can see why. On foot, your guide takes you to San rock art sites hidden among the boulders: animals, human figures, and hunting scenes painted in ochre over thousands of years. The formations are striking on their own, but the rock art gives them a human layer that changes how you look at the landscape. On the coast road back toward Swakopmund, you stop at the rusted hull of the Zeila, a fishing trawler that ran aground on the Skeleton Coast in 2008. Lunch is out among the peaks themselves, surrounded by silence and stone, with no restaurant in sight.
The Rock Art
The San paintings at Spitzkoppe are scattered across several boulder sites. Your guide knows where to find them and walks you through what the figures depict. Some are estimated at 2,000 to 4,000 years old. They're painted in red and white ochre directly onto the granite, protected from the weather by rock overhangs.
The Shipwreck
The Zeila sits half-swallowed by surf and sand on the Skeleton Coast. This stretch of shoreline has been claiming ships for centuries; the Benguela Current is cold, powerful, and unforgiving. The wreck makes a good 15-minute photo stop on the drive back toward Swakopmund.
Desert Lunch
You eat among the granite peaks with no walls and no engine noise, just rock, sky, and the occasional lizard.
